Line up the places, start from the ones: carry a ten, or borrow one ten for ten ones

About This Practice

Three-digit sums still come down to two rules: ten ones carry into the tens, and a short ones column borrows one ten as ten ones. The vertical form unfolds step by step — carries show up as a small red 1 above the next column, borrows as a red dot and a small adjusted digit. Every puzzle guarantees a carry or a borrow, so you practise exactly the tricky parts.

Watch a three-digit vertical sum unfold step by step: line up the places first, then start from the ones. When the ones overflow, a small red 1 appears above the tens; when the ones fall short, the tens digit is marked with a borrow dot and a small adjusted digit. Tap "Next step" and walk through every stage yourself.

How to Play

  1. Read the problem: are the ones, tens and hundreds lined up?
  2. Tap "Next step" and start with the ones: carry a ten, or borrow one ten for ten ones.
  3. Watch the red marks: a small 1 above a column is a carry; a dot on a digit means it was borrowed from.
  4. Handle the lent 1 before subtracting the tens, then the hundreds — a carry can even open the thousands place.
  5. Check every step against the answer, then tap "New Round" to keep practising.
