Borrow 1 from the small number to turn 9 into 10, then add the rest

About This Practice

Make-ten is the key strategy for carrying addition: 9 plus something is hard, so borrow 1 from the small number to complete the ten-frame first, then add what is left to 10. Tap “Move 1 over” to watch a blue dot fill the frame, turning 9 + ? into an easy 10 + ? you can see at a glance.

Nine red dots don't quite fill the ten-frame, with some blue dots beside them. Tap “Move 1 over” and watch a blue dot complete the frame — suddenly 9 + something becomes 10 + the rest, easy to see at a glance.

How to Play

  1. Look at the ten-frame: 9 red dots leave exactly one empty cell.
  2. Tap “Move 1 over” — one blue dot hops in and completes the ten.
  3. Count the blue dots left outside the frame.
  4. Say the equation: 9 plus something becomes 10 plus the rest — solve it at a glance.
  5. In the next round, try planning yourself how many are needed to make ten.
