Segments, Lines & Rays

A segment has 2 endpoints, a ray has 1, a line has none โ€” only segments can be measured

About This Practice

One line, three forms: a segment has endpoints at both ends and a length you can measure; a ray has one endpoint and extends forever the other way; a line has no endpoints and extends both ways. Tap the buttons to switch, watch endpoints disappear while arrows keep running outward, then read the feature table to tell the three apart.

Switch between segment, ray and line on one canvas: both ends of a segment are locked and measurable, a ray's arrows run outward one way forever, a line's arrows run both ways. A feature table compares endpoints, measurability and extension side by side.

How to Play

  1. Tap Segment: count the endpoints and try to measure its length.
  2. Tap Ray: which end is locked? Which way do the arrows run?
  3. Tap Line: any endpoints left? How many ways do the arrows run?
  4. Read the feature table: endpoints, measurability, extension.
  5. Picture the three lines in your head, then tap to check.
