Why is a rectangle’s area “length × width”? Add or remove rows and columns with the buttons and watch the total follow: one more row adds a whole row of squares, one more column adds a whole column. Once you have played with it, the formula surfaces on its own — counting rows × columns is exactly length × width.
Add or remove rows and columns of a rectangle and watch the total-squares equation update in sync. Discover there is no need to count one by one: rows times columns (length times width) gives the area.
