Solving Equations by Transposing

Transposing flips the sign: move the number term across the equals sign and x shows up

About This Practice

To solve an equation, move a term across the equals sign and flip its sign at the same time — that is transposing, and it works because of the properties of equality: do the same thing to both sides. Tap a number card and watch it fly over the equals sign and turn into the opposite sign; then combine, scale the coefficient to 1, and reshape the equation into x=a step by step.

Equation terms become cards: tap a number card and watch it fly across the equals sign while its sign flips (transposing flips signs); then combine, and scale the coefficient to 1, step by step until x=a. Covers x+a=b, x−a=b and ax+b=c with randomized rounds.

How to Play

  1. Read the equation: which side holds the number term, which holds x.
  2. Tap the number card: it flies across the equals sign and its sign flips (transposing flips signs).
  3. Tap "Combine": the right side becomes a single number.
  4. For ax+b=c, tap "Scale to 1": divide both sides by a.
  5. See the result x=a, then grab a new round.
