The Unit Fraction

Denominator n means the unit is 1/n — every fraction is some unit pieces put together

About This Practice

Split the whole into 4 equal parts and each part is 1/4 — a little brick, the building block of fractions. 3/4 is simply 3 of those 1/4 bricks. If the denominator is n, the unit fraction is 1/n, and different denominators make different sizes: 1/5 is smaller than 1/4. Move the slider and deal new fractions to see it clearly.

Drag the slider to split the whole into N equal parts and meet the first piece — the unit fraction 1/N. Then build a random fraction: 3/4 is just 3 pieces of 1/4. Below, 1/N and 1/b stand side by side: different denominators make different units.

How to Play

  1. Drag the slider: the whole splits into N equal parts.
  2. Watch the first piece (the glowing one): it is the unit fraction 1/N.
  3. Tap “New Fraction” to get a random one.
  4. Count: how many 1/b pieces build it? Read the sentence below.
  5. Compare the two strips at the bottom: different denominators, different first-piece widths.
