Why does the column method for 2-digit × 2-digit look like that? Cut the big rectangle by tens and ones and you will see: 23×34 is really four small rectangles — 20×30, 20×4, 3×30 and 3×4 — and their areas add up to the answer. The two rows of the column method are exactly the right pair and the left pair of blocks.
