Numbers within 10000

Ten hundreds make one thousand, ten thousands make one ten-thousand; ten in a place carries into the next

About This Practice

On the abacus, ten ones on the ones rod become one bead on the tens rod, and ten tens become one hundred — that is "carry ten into the next place". Build the target number bead by bead, then tap "999 + 1" to see exactly how one more than 999 opens up a brand-new place: the thousands.

Add beads on a four-rod abacus (thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) to build numbers: when a rod fills up with ten, they regroup into one bead on the next rod. Tap "999 + 1" to watch the thousands place being born. Build the target number, read it aloud, and master place value within 10000.

How to Play

  1. Look at the target number: how many thousands, hundreds, tens and ones?
  2. Tap the rods to add beads and build the target on the abacus.
  3. What happens when one rod fills up with ten? Watch them regroup into the next place.
  4. Tap "999 + 1" to watch the carry again — where does the 1 in the thousands come from?
  5. Read the number you built out loud, then try a new one.
