About This Practice

Adding three numbers โ€” do you combine the first pair or the last pair first? Slide the ring back and forth: the three color groups never change and the total never changes. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) โ€” that is the associative property of addition.

Three groups of colored blocks with a ring marking the pair that adds first. Tap Move ( ) and the ring slides from the first two groups to the last two: the color grouping never changes, and both equation lines end with exactly the same total.

How to Play

  1. Look at the three groups: which two does the ring mark as adding first?
  2. Read the highlighted line: add the pair inside the parentheses first, then the third.
  3. Tap Move ( ) and watch the ring slide to the other pair.
  4. Compare both lines: same color groups โ€” did the total change?
  5. Tap New Problem for three new numbers and check that it always holds.
