Comparing Segments & Midpoints

Overlay segments to compare lengths; the midpoint splits a segment into two equal parts

Loading...

About This Practice

The most reliable way to compare two segments is the overlay method: make one endpoint of each segment coincide along the same line and look at the other ends — the longer one is obvious. The point that splits a segment into two equal segments is its midpoint: if M is the midpoint of AB, then AM = MB = half of AB. Drag, tap, and see the conclusions for yourself.

Drag segment CD onto AB and align one endpoint to compare their lengths directly and read the difference; then mark the midpoints and verify with equality ticks that the midpoint splits a segment into two equal parts.

How to Play

  1. Look at segments AB and CD and estimate which is longer.
  2. Hold and drag CD so its left endpoint aligns and overlays with AB.
  3. Read the result: does the far end overshoot or fall short? By how many centimeters?
  4. Tap Mark midpoints and watch the equality ticks on both halves.
  5. Take a new problem: estimate first, then verify by overlaying.
