Solids & Nets

A solid unfolds along its faces into a flat net, and the net folds back into the solid

About This Practice

Many solids are enclosed by flat faces: cut a solid along some faces and lay it flat to get its net; fold the net back and the solid returns. A cube's net is 6 squares (with several possible layouts), a cylinder's net is a rectangle plus two equal circles, and a cone's net is a sector plus a circle. Unfold, fold, and guess.

Meet the cube, cylinder, and cone with their flat nets: tap Unfold/Fold to watch the faces spread out and close up, then play the net-guessing quiz to build the connection between solids and flat patterns.

How to Play

  1. Pick a solid: cube, cylinder, or cone.
  2. Tap Unfold to watch the faces spread into a net, then Fold to close them up.
  3. Observe which faces make up each solid and how they connect.
  4. Enter Quiz: look at a net and judge which solid it folds into.
  5. A wrong answer is fine — go back and unfold it again.
