Equal Sharing

The same amount in every share is fair sharing; what cannot be shared out is the future remainder

About This Practice

Equal sharing is where division begins: share a pile into groups so that every group gets the same amount. Tap the plates to deal apples in one at a time and find out: when does everything split exactly, and when are some left over? Those leftovers are what division will later call the remainder.

Choose how many plates to use, then tap a plate to move apples in one at a time: when every plate holds the same amount, that is fair sharing. If a few apples are left over at the end, that is "sharing with leftovers" — the groundwork for division.

How to Play

  1. Count the apples, then set the number of plates with the + and − buttons.
  2. Tap a plate to move one apple onto it, or tap "Share one" to give an apple to the emptiest plate.
  3. Watch as you deal: does every plate hold the same amount?
  4. When the pool is empty: did every plate end up equal, or were some apples left out?
  5. Change the number of plates and share again — see how 12 ÷ 3 = 4 comes about.
