A ratio is a division; scale both terms and the value stays

About This Practice

A ratio expresses division between two numbers: the value of a : b is simply a ÷ b. Tune the first and second terms and watch the ratio and its value change; tap “Simplify” — both terms divide by their greatest common factor and the value doesn’t budge, just like reducing a fraction.

Red and blue cells in a row: tune the first and second terms and watch a : b and the value a ÷ b change. Tap “Simplify” — both terms divide by the greatest common factor and the value doesn't budge.

How to Play

  1. Look at the row of red and blue cells: how many of each?
  2. Write the ratio a : b and work out the value a ÷ b.
  3. Adjust either term and watch the ratio and value respond.
  4. Tap “Simplify”: both terms divide by the greatest common factor.
  5. Check: is the value the same before and after?
