Simplifying Ratios & Sharing by Ratio

Dividing both terms of a ratio keeps its value; to share by ratio, find total parts first, then each part

About This Practice

Sharing by ratio takes two steps. Step 1, simplify: divide both terms by a common factor — 4 : 6 = 2 : 3, the ratio value stays the same. Step 2, share: add the terms to get total parts (2 + 3 = 5), divide the total by the number of parts to get each part, then multiply by each term. The animated bar split makes sharing 20 items in a 2 : 3 ratio easy to see.

First simplify the given ratio by dividing out common factors step by step, then share the total by the simplest ratio: watch a bar split into two segments that grow part by part, see each share's count, and check that the two shares add back up to the total.

How to Play

  1. Read the problem: how many items, shared in what ratio?
  2. Tap Divide: divide both terms by a common factor to get the simplest ratio.
  3. Tap Share: watch the bar split into two segments in that ratio.
  4. Follow the working: total parts = a + b, each part = total ÷ total parts.
  5. Check: the two piles add up to the total, then take a new problem.
