Partition Rectangles

Rows × columns = total parts, all the same size

About This Practice

Slice a rectangle by rows and columns and you get a tidy grid: 3 rows and 4 columns make 12 parts, and every part is exactly the same size. Tap cells to color and count them, see how each one is 1 of 12 parts — and find out what happens when all 12 are colored!

Change the rows and columns to slice a rectangle into a grid: 3 rows by 4 columns makes 12 equal parts. Tap cells to color and count them, share by share.

How to Play

  1. Use + and − to change the rows and columns and watch the grid change.
  2. Read the equation: 3 rows × 4 columns = 12 parts.
  3. Tap cells to color them, counting aloud: 1 part, 2 parts, 3 parts…
  4. Look at your colored share: 5 parts means 5 of 12.
  5. Color every cell and see what 12 of 12 parts becomes!
