Equal Shares

It is an equal share only when every part is the same size

About This Practice

Cut a circle into equal parts and every part comes out the same size — that is what “equal shares” means. Tap parts to color them and describe your share, then meet how 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 are written and read.

Split a circle or square into 2, 3, or 4 equal parts and tap to color a few. Say your share—1 of 3 parts—and see how 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 are written and named.

  1. Choose 2, 3, or 4 parts to split the circle equally.
  2. Tap parts to color them: what is your share of the whole?
  3. Color just 1 part and see how 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 is written — read it aloud.
  4. Compare the two circles below: which one shows equal parts?
  5. Switch to the square, or tap New Share to start over.
