About This Practice

0.7 and 0.23 both live inside one big square: cut it into 10 strips and each strip is 0.1, or into 100 cells and each cell is 0.01. Shade a few and watch—fractions and decimals are two ways of writing the same number.

Cut the big square into 10 strips or 100 tiny cells. Shade 7 strips to make 0.7, or 23 cells to make 0.23, and watch fractions pair up with decimals.

  2. Pick strips or cells mode and tap to shade.
  3. Check the readout below: 73 cells means 73/100 = 0.73.
  4. Tap Check to see if the shading matches.
  5. At whole tens of cells, read the equal way: 70/100 = 7/10 = 0.7.
