Decimal Point Shift Rules

Moving the point right one place multiplies by 10; left one place divides by 10

About This Practice

Nudge the point in 0.52 one place right and it becomes 5.2 — ten times as big; nudge again and it becomes 52. Nudge left and the number shrinks to one tenth. The place-value table shows both sides of the story: either the point travels between the digits, or the digits slide across the places — two views of one rule.

0.52 → 5.2 → 52 — what actually moved? Drag the slider to shift the decimal point, and compare two views on the place-value table: the point moves while digits stay (place names follow), or the digits slide while the point stays fixed. Both tell the same rule. Get a random starting number and master ×10 and ÷10.

How to Play

  1. Read the starting decimal, say 3.52.
  2. Drag the slider or tap "×10 right": the point moves one place — what happens?
  3. Switch to "Digits move": the digits slide one place — did the value change the same way?
  4. Tap "÷10 left" to move back, then read the two highlighted rules.
  5. Get a new number, predict first, then check by moving the point.
