Equal Groups

Multiplication adds equal groups

About This Practice

How do you count several groups that all hold the same amount, without counting one by one? Tap the groups one at a time; once all are counted, the repeated-addition equation and the multiplication equation appear side by side, making the link between adding equal groups and multiplication plain to see. Switch between Guided, Standard and Challenge to try bigger numbers.

Split objects into groups that all have the same amount, then tap each group to count along. How many groups and how many in each—the total is repeated addition, and that is exactly what multiplication means.

How to Play

  1. Read the problem: how many groups are there, and how many dots in each?
  2. Tap each group circle; counted groups turn green while the tally shows groups counted and the running total.
  3. When every group is counted, read the repeated-addition equation and the multiplication equation together.
  4. Tap “New Problem” to practice again, or switch difficulty to change the number of groups and the group size.
