Parallelograms & Trapezoids

A quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel is a parallelogram; exactly one pair means trapezoid

About This Practice

Quadrilaterals are classified by their opposite sides: both pairs parallel = parallelogram (rectangles and squares are special ones); exactly one pair parallel = trapezoid; neither pair = general quadrilateral. Drag the sliders and morph a trapezoid into a parallelogram with your own hands.

Drag two sliders to reshape a quadrilateral: top width and top tilt. The canvas highlights live whether each pair of opposite sides is parallel (with tick marks) and classifies the shape as parallelogram, trapezoid, or general quadrilateral. Can you turn a trapezoid into a parallelogram?

How to Play

  1. Read the two chips: are top/bottom parallel? left/right?
  2. Drag “Top width”: when do the left and right sides become parallel?
  3. Drag “Top tilt” until the top and bottom are parallel.
  4. With both pairs parallel, read the verdict: parallelogram.
  5. Make just one pair parallel for a trapezoid; none for a general quadrilateral.
